The NGSC (Next Generation Service Corps) program provides students with opportunities to engage in community-based activities and leadership roles that deepen their understanding of current events and local issues. By participating in engagement circle activities, students gain insights into their community, while the Cross-Sector Leadership Certificate helps them explore leadership across various sectors. This certificate equips students with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand civic institutions, public policy, and leadership roles in government, nonprofits, and businesses.
Students apply what they learn through hands-on experiences, including internships and leadership activities within NGSC, while working in Mission Teams. These teams help students understand the systems they must navigate to drive meaningful change. The process emphasizes the importance of research and discussions with subject matter experts to ensure a deep understanding of the issues at hand before projects are applied in the community.
The program’s required courses cover topics such as leadership and change, cross-sector collaboration, and social entrepreneurship, with a focus on ethical decision-making and global perspectives on civic engagement. The curriculum also addresses both historical and contemporary issues, preparing students to contribute to public service and civic life. Courses include NGSC Community Impact Lab, Leadership and Change, Cross-Sector Collaboration, and Social Entrepreneurship, along with elective options such as the Leadership Capstone or NGSC Leadership Instruction. Additional opportunities include workshops on civic engagement, voter registration, literacy, and democratic principles, fostering a comprehensive understanding of civic responsibilities and leadership.
Through this integrated learning approach, NGSC students are prepared to lead across sectors, contribute meaningfully to their communities, and navigate complex systems to drive positive change.
